[edit]DescriptionWatching Gus Beauregard Statue Come Down New Orleans 02.jpg |
English: New Orleans, night of 16 May 2015.
At barricades by foot of Carrolton Avenue by Bayou St. John, 1 block away of equestrian statue of P.G.T. Beauregard that the New Orleans City Council had authorized to be removed from its prominent location. Preparations were underway to at the time detach and lift the statue off it's base. Barricades kept spectators back a full block, in part due to death threats against workers removing the monument. Groups of people gathered near the barricades, some cheering the removal, some protesting against it, and others merely curious to watch. The statue was in a small traffic circle called Beauregard Circle at the foot of Esplanade Avenue at one of the entrances to City Park at the intersection of Carrollton and Wisner Boulevard beside Bayou St. John. The statue was removed on the night of 16 May / early morning 17 May 2017, to be put in storage pending finalization of plans to put it in a museum, sculpture park, or similar facility with historic context.
