Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On August 2, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a clear-sky summer day in the U.S. state of Washington.

Sitting in the northwestern corner of the contiguous United States, Washington is bordered by British Columbia, Canada (north), Idaho (east), and Oregon (south) and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The Columbia River, which is visible in this image, flows from the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, first northwest then south through Washington, then turns westward to form most of the border between Oregon and Washington before pouring into the Pacific Ocean.

Puget Sound is a massive inlet of the Pacific Ocean stretching southward about 100 miles (160 km) into Washington. With a 2,500 mile- (1,609 km-) long shoreline, Puget Sound holds a complex system of islands, channels, inlets, and estuaries fed by freshwater streams formed in the Olympica and Cascade Mountains.
