Summary
[edit]DescriptionWarren, Pennsylvania - 20210912 - 04 - Warren County Courthouse.jpg |
English: The Warren County Courthouse, 204 4th Avenue (corner Market Street), Warren, Pennsylvania, as seen in September 2021. Built in 1876 to a design by the Buffalo, New York-based architect Milton Beebe, this is an unusually exuberant example of the then-popular French Second Empire style that is one of the most architecturally magnificent buildings in the city (not to mention a contributing property to the Warren Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999). The façade is centered on a projecting element that contains the main entrance - a pair of twin arches surrounded by rusticated stone trim and framed by stout columns - which is surmounted consecutively with a Classical pediment, a domelike convex mansard perforated by an impressive Baroque triple window; a square, mansarded clock tower, and a statue of Justice. The corner "towers" that flank this central projection are scarcely less impressive, pierced at the roof by elegant pedimented dormers and receding deeply into lateral elevations where the scheme of rich ornamentation continues unabated. Ubiquitous on the façade, of course, is lavish Classical detailing: chamfered quoins, stylized pilaster strips, ornate brackets, the keystone-studded stone window heads so typical of the style, ornamental iron work adorning the grand staircase leading to the entrance, and countless other baubles make for a visually stunning experience. |
