Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Walsh's Row. 6xx South Broadway. The Eugene Field House is located at far end of row; 634 S. Broadway. In 1829 the land along the 600 block of Broadway was left to the city of St. Louis, with the intention of raising funds to support city schools. Edward Walsh leased the land from the school system in 1845 and erected a row of 12 Greek Revival houses to lease as rental units. In 1850 Roswell Field and his family leased the house at 624 S. Broadway. Field, a lawyer, lived in the house through the next few years and was residing there during his defense of a slave suing for his freedom in Missouri, Dred Scott. The Field house, as it is now called, was saved from demolition with the rest of Walsh?s Row in 1934 because of the association with Fields son, Eugene, who became famous in the last half of the 19th century as the ?children?s poet.? It was the first house museum to open in St. Louis and continues to this day.
