Summary
[edit]DescriptionWalkhampton, Former Yelverton to Princetown railway - geograph.org.uk - 1012310.jpg |
English: Walkhampton: Former Yelverton to Princetown railway This is the trackbed of the former Yelverton to Princetown railway that opened in 1883 and closed in 1956. To give a couple of indications of how convoluted the route of the railway was, as it wound its way around the contours of the moorland on its way to Princetown, firstly the view here has been taken looking in the direction of Yelverton along the railway and east-south-eastwards, although Yelverton itself is to the south-west, as the crow flies, in SX5267, and secondly the trackbed here is at about 325 metres above sea level. If you walk across the moor to the left, the railway is encountered again in about 400 metres, more or less parallel to this section, but running in the opposite direction, towards Princetown, and at about 380 metres above sea level.
The trackbed here now forms a section of the long distance footpath of the Dartmoor Way. |
