A brief but fierce storm moved across much of southern Ontario Wednesday, bringing with it torrential downpours and strong winds that toppled trees and created chaos on the roads. Waterloo Regional Police say an 11-year-old girl suffered a broken leg after being pinned under a felled oak tree.
Earlier, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a large stretch of southern Ontario, including Toronto, but it has since been cancelled. "The main concern is straight line winds that could top out between 60 and 80km/hr here in the GTA," warned CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles. "We were a little concerned earlier with the fact that this storm has produced wind gusts upwards of 100km/hr up towards Kitchener/Waterloo." The day started with a soupy layer of fog descending on the city, creating some fantastic opportunities for photographers and risky conditions for drivers. The fog proved to be dangerous for OPP officers investigating a fatal crash on the eastbound 401 near McCowan. The conditions apparently made it hard for passing motorists to see the police barriers erected to block off the crash scene and a few cars only narrowly missed investigators in the area. Authorities opened the crash site earlier than expected because of the near-misses. The gloomy conditions are expected to last throughout Wednesday and into Thursday. The worst of Wednesday's weather is behind us, but rain is expected to be heavy through the overnight period. There’s good news though -- Saturday is expected to be a warm, sunny day. www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/127364... Have a great week :)! |
