Verscholen achter het historische Lange Voorhout in Den Haag staat een bijzonder monument: de ’s-Gravenhaagsche Stadsrijschool. gelegen aan de Bibliotheekstraat en herbergt de oudste burgermanege van Nederland. jarenlang is aangenomen dat de rijschool in 1806 werd gesticht door Lodewijk Napoleon Bonaparte, maar daarvoor zijn nooit bewijzen gevonden’ de manege bestond in 1802 en is vermoedelijk gebouwd door Baron Bentinck voor privé-doeleinden. Een huurcontract uit 1802 vermeldt dat de gemeente ’s-Gravenhage de manege had gekocht van Bentinck en deze verhuurde aan de Franse ambassadeur.
