Heat, and the dazzling brilliance of Mediterranean light, are the overriding sensations of this coastal view. The setting is the French province of Rousillon, near the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border.

De Monfreid painted this canvas in 1889, the same year he entered the Paris art arena by exhibiting with Paul Gauguin and his Pont-Aven School colleagues. The artist was one of Gauguin's most loyal supporters, though he did not adopt Gauguin's approach to painting.

While De Monfreid emphasized the scene's intense light, he also endowed the rocky shore and small hut with a convincing sense of volume and solidity.
