The goddess would have once rested on a staff with grain or a libation bowl in her outstretched hand. She represents Persephone or her mother Demeter, both goddesses of the harvest. In myth, Persephone was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, and while Demeter sought her, the earth withered. Zeus decreed that Persephone spend two-thirds of the year with her mother, corresponding to the growing season, and the other third, winter, in the underworld.
