Title
WHISTLE
Description
English:

Sheet silver whistle. The whistle is broadly conical in shape, formed by folding over sheet silver and soldering the sides together. The whistle tapers towards the mouthpiece end. At the mouthpiece is a small semi-circular indentation for resting the bottom lip upon when being played. At the centre is a semi-circular blow hole. The wider end is decorated with a raised, alternately inverted running motif of trefoils with a stem, above which are three pellets; all within a plain band above and below. The end is circular in section (now slightly mis-shapen due to damage) and is open. The possible remains of an attachment hoop can be seen on the side opposite the blow hole.

Dimensions: Length: 33mm; Length at top of mouthpiece: 6mm; Width at top of mouthpiece: 3mm; Diameter at bottom:10mm. Weight: 3.33g

Discussion: A similar whistle from Wendover, Buckinghamshire is recorded on the PAS database: BUC-D5A350 (2010 T625). The Wendover whistle has a closed end; the Yarcombe whistle was probably also closed in a similar fashion, the end having since been lost due to damage.
