[edit]DescriptionW.T. Pike Contemporary Biographies Bristol 1898 illustrations (10b).jpg |
Contemporary Biographies, by W.T. Pike (d.1924), including "Bristol in 1898: Contemporary Biographies". (Pike's New Century Series no.1). Published in 1898 by W.T. Pike & Co., 19 Grand Parade, Brighton. The volumes in this series each contain an illustrated section about the county, followed by a long list of short biographies (each with a photographic portrait) of men of the county who were alive at the time of publication (plus a few who had recently died). This volume does not have an index to the illustrations of buildings and views of the county, but it does have an index to the biographies. Showing one of the illustrations: East end of north choir aisle, Bristol Cathedral. The caption says: "Showing, on the left, bust of Southey the poet; in the centre a much admired statue by Bailey; and on the right, the tomb of Bishop Bush, first bishop of Bristol". |
