Description
English: Four U.S. Navy Vought F-8E Crusader (BuNo 150867, 150897, 150901, 150914) of Fighter Squadron 211 (VF-211) "Checkmates" in flight. VF-211 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 21 (CVW-21) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CVA-19) for a deployment to Vietnam from 6 December 1965 to 1 August 1966.
  • F-8E 150867 collided with a karst rock near Ph Cat Ba, Haiphong, Vietnam, on 29 April 1966 while strafing a surface vessel. The pilot was killed.
  • F-8E 150897 lost power after launch from USS Hancock in Gulf of Tonkin and crashed into water on 21 February 1965. The pilot ejected and was rescued.
  • F-8E 150901 was shot down by anti-aircraft artillery over Dong Ham, 37km north-west of Haiphong, Vietnam, on 23 May 1966. The pilot ejected and was rescued.
Note, as the F-8E 150897 was already lost on 21 February 1965, the photo was probably taken during the 1964-1965 deployment.
