קליארי (Cagliari) היא בירתה של המחוז האוטונומי של סרדיניה ובירת נפת קליארי . שמה של קליארי בסרדית - Casteddu משמעו "המבצר". אוכלוסיית העיר מונה 160 אלף נפש, או כחצי מיליון בעיר רבתי.

העיר מצויה בדרום האי, במרכזו של "גולפו דלי אנג'לי" (Golfo degli Angeli) - שפירושו מפרץ המלאכים. הוא מתחיל מ"סֵלָ‏ה דל דיאבולו" (Sella del Diavolo) שפירושו: "אוכף השטן", לפי אגדה הקושרת את המלאכים להגנה על יופיו של המפרץ.

במזרח העיר מצויים הרי "סטה פרטלי" (monti dei Sette Fratelli), ("הרי שבעת האחים"), במערבה הרי "קפוטרה" (Capoterra) ובצפון הבקעה הפורייה "קאמפידנו" (Campidano).

כמו רומא, ליסבון ואיסטנבול גם קליארי משתרעת על שבע גבעות.

האזור העתיק של העיר נקרא "המבצר" (Castello). הוא משתרע על ראש הגבעה, ממנה תצפית על "מפרץ המלאכים". מרבית חומות העיר נשארו ללא פגע מאז המאה ה-13. החומות ומגדלי העיר בנויים מאבן גיר לבנה. הצבע הלבן של האבן בולט בנוף. דייוויד הרברט לורנס שביקר בקליארי ב-1921 השווה את לובן בתי העיר כפי שמשתקף לאור קרני השמש הים תיכונית ל"ירושלים הלבנה". [1]

בחומת העיר שני מגדלים מהמאה ה-13: מגדל פאנקראס ומגדל הפיל.

חזית הקתדרלה, פיזאנית במקור ושנבנתה מחדש בסגנון בארוקי במאה ה-18, שוחזרה בשנת 1930 חזרה לסגנון מתקופת שלטונה של פיזה, עם אלמנטים נאו-רומאנים. מגדל הפעמונים שרד בצורתו מקורית. ליד הקתדרלה נמצא ארמון הממשל של "פרובינציית קליארי" אשר שימש עד לשנת 1900 מקום מושבו של מושל האי.

במבצר נמצא גם ההמוזיאון הארכאולוגי הלאומי של קליארי, הכולל האוסף הגדול והחשוב של פריטים מהתרבות הנוראגית, תקופת הברונזה,התקופה הפיניקית והרומאית. המוזיאון מארח גם סדנאות של בעלי אומנים.

הערה שקבלתי: מקור השם הפניקי של בירת סרדיניה הוא כנראה ‘קרית אל’ או ‘כר-אל’....... גם מלגה וקדיז מושבות פניקיות בספרד נגזרו מ’קדש’ ומלכה’.
