Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Viper's bugloss (Echinum vulgare) ... growing at the foot of a dead tree. Other names for this plant are 'bluebottle' and 'blue cat's tail'. The plant's name is derived from past usage as a preventative and a remedy for curing snake bite. The 17th century herbalsit William Coles describes its stem as being speckled like a snake's skin, which at his time was proof of its value against snake venom. An infusion of the seeds was said to drive away sadness and melancholy, and to promote milk flow in nursing mothers. Modern-day farmers often refer to it as 'blue devil - disliking the plant which, because of its deep persistent roots, is difficult to exterminate. The name bugloss is derived from the Greek word for ox-tongue and refers to the plant's tongue-shaped leaves.
