Description
This is an example of an artist not doing his homework. The scene is undoubtably the battle of Heligoland, May 9, 1864, and Bille's favourite, the frigate Jylland was there. But the flags of the two Austrian frigates to the left are not the red-white-red they should be, but the red-white-blue of the Netherlands. So the experts at Sotheby's had no choice but to call this an engagement between a Danish and a Dutch fleet, which never took place.
