Summary
[edit]DescriptionViking longhouse - geograph.org.uk - 816867.jpg |
English: Viking longhouse. This was the entrance to a Viking longhouse which was 64ft in length, lying in the direction of the summit on the horizon (Whernside). The remains of the walls are clear on the ground but do not photograph well in close-up.
More details can be found at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/search/fr.cfm?rcn=YDNPA05-MYD3669 "Finds associated with the largest building included a long spearhead, knives and three bronze coins, all minted at York around the middle of the 9th century, and including one of Archbishop Wulfhere, suggesting that the Ribblehead farm was occupied in the second half of the 9th century, making Ribblehead one of the earliest groups of Scandinavian settlers in Yorkshire." Other buildings on the site are 237343 and 237347 |
