Summary
[edit]DescriptionView to Dinas Head from Castle Point - geograph.org.uk - 1512488.jpg |
English: View to Dinas Head from Castle Point The remains of Fishguard fort sit on the clifftop. Completed in 1781 to defend the town against attack, following the 1779 raid by the privateer vessel Black Prince, the fort became the headquarters of the Fishguard Fencibles and was armed with eight 9-pounder guns.
Although alarm guns were fired from the fort following the 1797 raid by the French, the occupants had no further involvement in the action. The fort fell into disrepair at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. See also Last_invasion_of_Britain for an account of the so-called 'Last Invasion of Britain'. |
