Description |
English: Merigomish, Nova Scotia, from the northwest looking across tidal flats of French river. This is a typical farming town of the region. The only railway connecting the country in Nova Scotia east of here with that west crosses the bridge shown in this picture. The wagon road on the narrow bridge is the best one connecting points east with those west, but there are two or three poorer wagon roads in the valleys in the distance which connect the east with the west. The only wires, however, are shown in this picture. At high tide, the foreground is completely covered with water. The buildings on the right are the store, post-office, residences and barn of the post master, Wallace Copeland. The building behind the bushes this side of the railway is the other store. The railway depot is located near the clump of trees. On the left may be seen birch trees. The bark of the trees was much used by the Micmacs of this vicinity for canoes, the covering of their lodges, their boxes, and other purposes. The chief industries here are neglected farming, fishing and the harvesting of some of the second growth timber in the hills beyond. |
