Description
English: View north from the shot tower at 63 Centre Street. Center Street is on the right and Lafayette Street is on the left.

The crenellated rectangular building comprises freight depots for the New York and Harlem and New York and New Haven Railroads. It was replaced by the 1892 New York City Criminal Courts Building.

To its south, across Franklin Street, is the 1838 Halls of Justice, known as The Tombs. Its main entrance is on Centre Street; the long north-south building nearer Lafayette Street is the prison. On the site today is the Collect Pond Park.
