Summary
[edit]DescriptionVidhana Soudha , the State Legistlature of Karnataka, Bengaluru, India.jpg |
English: Vidhana Soudha, constructed in 1956 is the State legistlative Building of Karnataka and it is located on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Road at the North end of Cubbon Park, Bengaluru, India. Prior to 1956, the legislative houses were functioning at Attara Kacheri, a British built building in Cubbon Park that housed the high court of Mysore state also. Need was felt for a more spacious legislative building than Attara Kacheri. K.C. Reddy, the first Chief Minister of Mysore state finalized plan for constructing a new building and the foundation stone of the building was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, on 13 July 1951. Kengal Hanumanthaiya succeeded Reddy as Chief Minister after the 1952 election in the state and he revised the building plan to reflect the state's tradition and heritage. Hanumanthaiya personally supervised the construction work and the building was completed in 1956 at a total cost of around Rs. 1.75 crores. Built with granite and Neo-dravidian style, Vidhana Soudha is the largest legislative building in India and it stands today as a magnificent legislature building in India. The credit for planning, constructing as well as making persistent efforts for completing such an elegant and grandeur legislative building in independent India goes to Kangal Hanumanthaiya, the then Chief Minister of Mysore State, and team members, the chief engineer BR Manickam, skilled and unskilled artisans for making a dream a reality. |
