Victoria Adelaide Mary Louise (1840-1901), known as ‘Vicky’ to her family, was the eldest child of Queen Victoria. Image description: line drawing; an infant in long dress, in profile looking to the viewer's right. She is held by a woman whose face is mostly obscured. At the right of the image is part of a bird-cage on a table, with a small bird inside the object of the baby's attention. Inscriptions: bottom centre, "Victoria"; bottom left "V.R. del & sclt = 2/22 1841" [Victoria Regina delinit et sculptit.] Other key-phrases: infant looking at bird in cage; infant in nineteenth-century dress; baby; British royal family Photograph by Victoria and Albert Museum. C.f. File:Queen Victoria-Victoria, Princess Royal.jpg which appears to be photographed by another party. Other prints of this etching are held by the British Museum and in private collections. This print was acquired by the museum in 1932. Note the impression of the printing plate on the paper, which is stamped "V.A.M." outside the print area. The paper is bordered by a similar-coloured mask. |
