English: Vestalis luctuosa is a dragonfly from the family Calopterygidae and the suborder Zygoptera. The Calopterygidae family is known by the common name ebony jewelwing. This name was given because the color of the dragonfly's wings is metallic black like jewelry. Likewise with V. luctuosa which has a metallic black color on its wings and there is blue reflection when exposed to light. Its body measures about 40-45 mm long, with a wingspan of 75-80 mm. The eyes are large and clearly visible on the right and left. The body of the male dragonfly is metallic blue-purple and the four wings are metallic black with a blue-purple glow. While the female head and thorax are metallic green and the abdomen is brown and the four wings are colorless (Aswari, 2004). |
