Summary
[edit]DescriptionVertically-tilted beds (Dakota Sandstone, Lower Cretaceous; Red Rock Canyon Open Space, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA) 15.jpg |
English: The Dakota Sandstone and its correlatives are a widespread package of sandy siliciclastics deposited in the ancient Western Interior Seaway of North America. The unit dates to the late Early Cretaceous and early Late Cretaceous
Seen here are structurally tilted beds of the Dakota Sandstone in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The beds are ~vertically oriented. Younger units occur to the right - in this case, the Benton Shale (= off-picture). The steeply tilted sedimentary rocks in this area make up the foothills of the Front Range, which is part of the true Rocky Mountains. To the west of here (= to the left), the rocks get progressively older. Below Ordovician and Cambrian rocks are Precambrian crystalline basement rocks. Stratigraphy: Dakota Sandstone, Lower Cretaceous Locality: exposure along the Lower Hogback Trail, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, western side of the town of Colorado Springs, western El Paso County, central Colorado, USA (38° 51’ 00.69” North latitude, 104° 52’ 29.49” West longitude) |
