The truck is on a bridge, the only level spot on the well-kept but hilly street.By Janice KrenmayrWhen motoring through the Latin-American countries you must get accustomed to the checking stations near the borders, at each state, before and after the bigger cities, and frequently in between. Almost all countries have them and have names for them. We Have a name for them, too, but it isn't anything like theirs!I suppose they do serve a purpose, though. Near the border they are a double check on credentials and the honesty of the customs officer at the border; and the traffic lists compiled at the others probably enable the road department to estimate how much deeper the ruts will be in a week, a month or a year from now on any section of road.Of Course, we don't mind being checked, for we have nothing to hide (expect what is hidden) and we have enough papers, stamps and seals for joy. Our only complaint here in Colombia is that they aren't consistent in their checking.Sometimes they beckon Joe into their little guardhouse, laboriously copy our names from the passport into their ledger (always short-circuiting a few letters) and mark down that we came from Guacinton, Huasintn or some other original spelling of Washington.Other times they stick their heads (which might number as high as six) into the car and are satisfied with answers to"where from? Where to? and Why?""But many times they just give you a"what the heck are you stopping here for"stare. They don't move a finger to wave you on or wriggle a toe to come to your car. They simply lean in the doorway of their pin-up-girl-decorated cubicle and stare. After a few seconds Joe would mutter some-thing in his beard and move on. The repetition of this staring act annoyed us so that often we were tempted to sail past the big"Pare!"(Stop) sign, but since we never knew what to expect, and they were armed, we felt we should consider the hide of Ticci,. our truck.It must be said, though, that we also I have had many nice conversations about road conditions, history and points of interest with men at other checking stations and have received many a snappy salute in parting.The road from the Venezuela border to Cucuta, one of the larger cities and a department (state) capital, was paved and we began to hope that we had seen the last of Colombia's poor roads.
