Description

looking down into the vase there are cracks along the lip of the vase from transportation

This beautiful Chinese palace vase was a gift to Congressman Garfield from Lt. Giles Bates Harbor. It was sent from Asia and arrived at his Washington home in the spring of 1876. Today, the vase can be seen in the parlor here at Garfield's Mentor home. Because the artifact is located in the far corner of the room, it is difficult to appreciate its full beauty and fine details. The distance also makes it hard to notice the repairs made to the porcelain rim.
