Summary
[edit]DescriptionVaraha temple, Khajuraho Madhya Pradesh 075.jpg |
English: The Varaha temple is a 10th-century mandapa with a profusely carved massive Varaha (boar) avatar of Visnu. It stands in front of the Lakshmana temple – a panchayatana Visnu temple.
The Varaha statue is carved from yellow sandstone monolith. It is about 1.75 meter tall, and 2.66 meter long. All over its body and leg are miniature carvings of Hindu arts and legends. These total twelve bands, and constitute over 650 miniature figures. The artwork covers Vedic deities, the Rudras and Shiva forms, Saptamatrikas, the Dasavataras, Dikpalas, river goddesses, Navgrahas, rishis, yogis, yoginis, and much more. Saraswati with her vina is shown on the front of the snout. At the tusk was the rescued mother earth (damaged and lost, only her feet can be seen). She reflects the historic legend about Varaha avatar in Hinduism. Numerous Varaha statues have been discovered in the temple ruins of central India and other regions, as well as Gupta era sites such as Eran (Airan). The Khajuraho Varaha is one the modestly preserved large statues. |
