Objet présenté dans l'exposition "Fendre l'air. Art du bambou au Japon" au musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, Paris

"Fendre l’air". Les gestes de générations d’artisans japonais résonnent dans le titre de cette exposition inédite, dédiée à l’art des paniers en bambou. Ces artisans se sont d’abord inspirés de modèles chinois qui eux-mêmes cherchaient à imiter avec virtuosité les formes sophistiquées de vases en bronze ou porcelaine.

Le renouveau, au début de l’ère Meiji, d’un certain type de cérémonie du thé dont les arrangements floraux utilisaient des récipients en bambou sollicita ensuite la créativité d’artistes raffinés et merveilleusement inventifs. Aujourd’hui encore, la vannerie japonaise en bambou procure à certains de ses créateurs, passés maîtres dans le tressage de la fibre, le prestigieux statut de Trésors nationaux vivants. Parfois dénuées de toute fonctionnalité, les vanneries les plus contemporains se muent en véritables sculptures, formant ainsi un champ artistique d’une profonde originalité.
