| Description |
Nederlands: De Van Monckhoven telescoop werd in 1880 aangekocht door prof. Désiré Van Monckhoven. In 1882 werd hij in Gent geleverd. Helaas is Van Monckhoven zelf gestorven in dat jaar, zodat hij zijn eigen 'supertelescoop' nooit heeft kunnen gebruiken. Zijn vrouw verkocht het toestel aan de UGENT. DE universiteit had op dat moment geen geschikte ruimte voor een telescoop van deze afmeting (3m lang, 2500 kg). Pas in 1907 was het observatorium op het Plateaugebouw klaar, en werd de grote telescoop geïnstalleerd op een speciaal ontworpen stenen draagkolom die van de fundering tot het dak doorheen het gebouw geplaatst werd. |
