In the springof 1904 he entered the army Young Mens Christian Association work at Fort Riley,Kansas, and there served for fifteen months, after which he became a student in theOttawa University, where he pursued a special course covering two years devoted touniversity work. In the fall of 1909 he removed to Ogden and became instructor inhistory, economics and athletics in the Ogden high school, with which he was thusconnected for a year. He also taught for one year as principal of the public schoolsof Moab, Utah, and was principal of the high school of Bingham for a year. On theexpiration of that period he entered the field of journalism and purchased the PressBulletin of Bine-ham, which he still owns and publishes. In February, 1912, Mr.Masters purchased the Provo Herald, which he has since successfully managed, andremains the owner of the two papers, which are representative journals of Utah. He

IRA H. MASTERS UTAH SINCE STATEHOOD 849 advocates high standards of journalism and publishes two of the most progressivepapers in Utah. On the 17th of March, 1912, Mr. Masters was married In Evanston, Wyoming,to Corrinne Harris Hammer, a native of Colorado and a daughter of Thomas E. andCatherine (Fonda) Harris, representatives of an old Illinois family, who, removing west-ward, became early settlers of Boulder, Colorado. In his political views Mr. Masters has always been a stalwart democrat since ageconferred upon him the right of franchise and he has done everything in his power topromote the growth and insure the success of the party. He was a delegate to thenational convention held in St. Louis when President Wilson was nominated for asecond term, and he is now representing his district in the state legislature, wherehe has been connected with many important constructive measures.
