English: Still from the American comedy short Upper and Lower (1922) with an unidentified male actor (possibly Zip Monberg), Alberta Vaughn, and Lee Moran in blackface (in shadow here), on page 62 of the April 1922 Film Fun. This is from an apparently lost film. It was common for American films to use white actors in blackface for black roles until the late 1930s, although in this film the use of blackface was the film's "comic" element were the Moran character violated then-societal racial norms as a white man disguised as a black man. Still caption: He (Moran) obeys the natural impulse inspired by all tunnels and after kissing the girl gives some of his Southern exposure to her (i.e., some of the burnt cork on his face rubbed off on her).
