[edit]DescriptionUnprecedented emissions from 2023 Canadian wildfires (Copernicus).png |
English: The wildfire season is far from over in Canada, with severe wildfires still active in various provinces, such as Alberta and British Columbia. This image, acquired on 16 September 2023, shows the massive smoke plume emitted by the fires ongoing in Alberta, engulfing the skies of the Arctic Circle. Since May 2023, 17.3 million hectares of land (an area larger than Austria and Hungary) have been burned by wildfires. According to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), the wildfire emissions from 1 May to 10 September are notably higher than the average levels. CAMS analyses, based on the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS), demonstrate that carbon emissions have been significantly higher than the 20-year average.
