A United 747 taking off on a very clear day at LAX, with Century City in the background. Most likely Flight 891 to Tokyo Narita. This particular example was the very first -400 variant of the 747 to fly for United Airlines, entering service in 1989. By 2000, United was operating a fleet of 43 747-400s, including two that had been destined for but given up by Northwest Airlines; they had replaced United's sizable existing fleet of older 747s. Decreased passenger demands and the 2002 bankruptcy shrank the active United 747-400 fleet to 30 aircraft, and in 2008, high fuel prices further shrank the fleet to 24, with a 25th aircraft on occasional service. The 777 fleet took over many of the former 747 routes, and the Airbus A350-900, due in 2016, will take over the remaining 747 routes. N171UA, formerly "Spirit of Seattle II," Boeing 747-400 |
