Description

United 6 has just arrived at New York Kennedy, after a Premium Transcon run from Los Angeles. This used to be the mainstay of my air travel experience in the 1990s, but on this particular day, I flew in on this flight on my way to London.

"City of Chicago," though not the first 767 off the line, was the first 767 to ever carry revenue passengers; it first flew on 20 July 1982, became the first 767 to be delivered on 19 August 1982, and entered revenue service in September 1982. Even 21 years later it was in good condition.

In the early 1990s, seven United 767-200s, including this one, were modified to extend the cruising range, to enable trans-Atlantic services. The modified aircraft were designated as the 767-200ET and had the specifications of a factory-built 767-200ER. But by the mid-1990s, 767-300ERs and 777s took over the United trans-Atlantic services, and this plane was put into dedicated premium duty between New York and California. The modified 767s had an extra lavatory in the economy class cabin as well as life vests and an "overwater" indication on the safety card.

United retired its 767-200 fleet in 2005, replacing them with special 3-class Boeing 757s and re-branding the 3-class service simply "p.s." This particular plane was retired in 2004 and has been stored in Victorville, California ever since.
