Summary

[edit]
Description

Detail of wood carving decorating one of the coaches of the Embassy sent to Pope Clement XI in 1716 by King João V. The theme is the meeting of the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean, and thus a celebration of the Portuguese discoveries and seafaring power.

The gilding has been restored in all its dazzling glory, to show how it must have looked when the Pope first saw it. Early 18th century, produced in Italy. In the collection of the Museu dos Coches, Lisbon.
