Summary
[edit]DescriptionUnion Hall, Johnstown 1.jpg |
English: Union Hall, located at 2 Union Place at the intersection with East Main Street in Johnstown, New York, was built in 1798 by Capt. Jean Batiste Vaumane De Fon Claire (or Fonclaire), a former officer In the French Army under Louis XVI, and was a popular tavern in the period after the American Revolutonary War. (Source: Sign on site) It was here that Nicholas "Nick" Stoner, a hunter, fur trapper, and Revolutonary War veteran, threw a red-hot poker at a Native American who claimed to have scalped Stoner's father in 1782. Stoner was arrested, but was freed by a mob of veterans and never stood trial. |
