Description |
English: Union Flag British Union Flag (post-1801 pattern). It was used on Nares' Arctic expedition in 1875 and was left at a supply depot at Repulse Harbour by Lieutenant Lewis Beaumont. Repulse Harbour formed part of the route of a sledge party led by Beaumont with instructions to explore the northern coast of Greenland. His group established the depot on 26 April 1876 and left more equipment there on 10 June the same year during their return journey. The flag was found there in 1883 by the US Greely Arctic Expedition. Adolphus W. Greely 'Report of the United States Expedition to Lady Franklin Bay, Grinnell Land' (Washington, 1888) vol. i, p.250 '... just north of the English Cairn at the latter place [Repulse Harbour], we found the location of the English depot of rations, and in it a sextrant, flag, cooking lamp, old articles of clothing etc'. The flag is made of wool bunting with a linen hoist and is hand-sewn with a rope and toggle attached for hoisting. It has been patched extensively with pieces of red wool bunting. There are cord ties at the hoist edge and and the flag was formerly attached to a staff, now removed. Lieutenant Beaumont's party were sent out to explore the north coast of Greenland, having set out from the Ellesmere Island side of Robeson Channel. They returned to Repulse Harbour badly affected by scurvy and had to abandon some of their equipment at this site. As the ice in the channel was now breaking up, they were unable to return to their ship and had to continue down the Greenland Coast towards Polaris Bay. The group had split in two at the beginning of the trip and Beaumont met up with the second party led by Wyatt Rawson. Everyone was picked up successfully with the exception of one casualty, Charles Paul. |
