La villa Ajavon, datée de 1922, est l’un des témoignages majeurs de l’élaboration d’un langage architectural original, nourri de syncrétisme : le style afro-brésilien. Elle est également le reflet de la transformation urbaine, économique et sociale d’une ville côtière africaine après l’abolition de l’esclavage. Les premiers navires européens qui accostèrent dans la cité portuaire de Ouidah, dans le golfe de Guinée, furent les navires portugais au XVIe siècle. Pendant les siècles suivants, la ville fut dédiée au commerce des esclaves : le port de Ouidah a vu partir des centaines de milliers d’esclaves pour les Amériques, notamment le Brésil et les Caraïbes. Après l’abolition de l’esclavage, la ville se consacre au XIXe siècle à l’exportation de l’huile de palme, utilisée en Europe pour la production de savon, de bougie et de lubrifiant pour l’industrie mécanique. En 1894, lors de l’instauration de la colonie du Dahomey, Ouidah est une ville florissante dédiée au commerce, bientôt concurrencée par Cotonou et Porto-Novo. La population de la ville voit l’émergence au cours du XIXe siècle d’une classe de riches négociants formant une bourgeoisie prospère. Parmi eux figurent à la fois des descendants de marchands d’esclaves et d’anciens esclaves qui, devenus libres, ont quitté le Brésil dès la première moitié du XIXe siècle pour retrouver leur terre d’origine, en Afrique. Ces anciens esclaves affranchis sont employés comme interprètes, travaillent dans l’administration ou se tournent vers le négoce. Ils constituent une communauté afro-brésilienne appelée « Aguda », Gravissant les échelons de l’échelle sociale, elle contribue à la naissance d’une culture singulière, nourrie de métissages.
