Summary
[edit]DescriptionUlysses S. Grant House (5999197126).jpg | The Ulysses S. Grant House in Galena, a national landmark (1860). Ulysses S. Grant (the S. doesn't stand for anything, he just wanted his initials to be U.S., short for Uncle Sam) first came to Galena in 1860 to help his father run a tannery. Grant was a veteran of the Mexican-American war, but had fallen on hard times after resigning from the army in 1854. Grant became a popular hero for the Union in the Civil War. After capturing Fort Donelson in Tennessee, Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to major general. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1864 and was tasked with managing the Union armies. He became the face of the Union war victories, earning him the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. After the war, Grant was named the nation's first four-star general. Returning to Galena a national hero, he was given an 1860 Italianate home by members of the local Republican party. Grant lived here for three years, until his election as the 18th President of the United States in 1868, serving two terms. |
