English: In the culturally rich and diverse region of Coastal Lampung, specifically in the Bandar Enom Semaka area, which encompasses several sub-districts within Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province, the indigenous population employs two distinct types of wedding invitations. The Ughawan Battu and official invitations are the two primary forms used in this region. The Ughawan Battu is a traditional invitation written in the Lampung Pesisir language, which is specifically addressed to traditional leaders, community leaders, and extended family members from both the bride's and groom's sides. In contrast, official invitations are more general, written in Malay or Indonesian, and are intended for the broader public, including colleagues or coworkers of the bride and groom who are not part of the Lampung ethnic group.
A distinct characteristic of Ughawan Battu is its unique function as an invitation to the extended family of the bride and groom to collaborate in the preparation of selimpok, a traditional Lampung dish consisting of sticky rice, thick coconut milk, and sliced shallots, typically served at significant events such as weddings and religious holidays. The process of preparing selimpok is referred to as "nyelimpok" or "nyelippok," which usually takes place the day before the wedding reception. The wedding reception itself typically occurs the day following the "nyelimpok" or "nyelippok" event, and two days after the "napai" event, which involves working together to prepare tapai ketan or tapai siwok for the wedding reception food. In contrast, standard official invitations, written in Malay or Indonesian, only provide information on the time and location of the wedding reception without extending an invitation to participate in the "nyelimpok" or "nyelippok" event as seen in Ughawan Battu. Recently, official invitations have also been translated into English and Mandarin, reflecting the growing trend of migration both within and outside the region among the indigenous people of Lampung Pesisir from the Bandar Enom Semaka region.
