Description
English: U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Zachariah Thuli, director of operations, Detachment Europe, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), hands material excavated during the 24-1DE recovery mission to U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Michael D. Wickman, U.S. Army Europe and Africa chief of staff and commanding general, Army National Guard in northern Germany, Nov. 02, 2023. These items will be taken back to Wickman’s home unit and kept for historical purposes. Wickman and his staff visited the WWII recovery site to observe operations within his geographical command. Communication and relationships between German officials, DPAA’s Europe/Mediterranean Detachment and recovery team leadership, serve to propel progress in achieving the fullest possible accountability of our service members during the 24-1DE recovery mission. Service members from DPAA, the 76th Airlift Squadron, 86th Medical Squadron, 31st, 86th and 786th Civil Engineer Squadrons, HQ Air Mobility Command, 41st Field Artillery, 12th Combat Aviation Brigades, and 2nd Cavalry Regiment are combined as one recovery team in Wistedt, Germany to recover possible remains, material evidence and life support equipment. There are believed to be approximately 1,000 missing personnel from World War II in Germany. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Morgan L. R. Burgess)
