English: MILLINGTON, Tenn. (May 5, 2010) Navy service members and their dependents listen to a safety brief before being allowed back to their homes in the base housing area of Naval Support Activity Mid-South. Residents were allowed back on the base to assess flooding damage to their property. Two days of rain dumped more than 14 inches in the area, causing a drainage ditch on the east side of the base to spill over and flood parts of the base. (U.S. Navy photo by Chris Desmond/Released) |

Image title | 100505-N-5862D-001 MILLINGTON, Tenn. (May 5, 2010) Cess Wood holds her 14-month-old son Cooper while listening to a safety brief before being allowed back aboard the base to assess the damage the flood waters caused to her house. Residents aboard Naval Support Activity Mid-South began the business of cleaning up their homes after damage sustained from flooding May 1 and 2. Two days of rain dumped more than 14 inches in the area, causing a levee to become overrun, flooding the base and surrounding community. Steven Barry, emergency manager for the Memphis District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was quoted in The Memphis Commercial Appeal on May 5 saying the flooding was not caused by a "breach" in or failure of the Big Creek levee in Millington. A drainage ditch on the east side of the Naval Support Activity Mid-South base spilled over and caused flooding on the base, he said."The Navy base was in essence acting as a big retention pond," Barry said. "It actually was helping (Millington) avoid water." (U.S. Navy photo by Chris Desmond/Released) |
