Petty Officer Fite is a 16-year Naval Reservist who has been activated for 24 months, temporarily leaving his profession as a Harris County, Texas Deputy Sherrif to provide security at Naval Station Ingleside. Fite brings to the unit his 14 years of experience and insight as a deputy sherriff that adds emphasis to the training. Fite, who is origionally assigned to Naval Reserve Center Houston, explained that baton is primarilly a defensive or non-lethal tool that is used when the situation calls for less than deadly force to apprehend a suspect or quell a riot situation. ASF personnel are made up of volunteers from all units aboard a naval station or vessel and are primarily used to augment the embarked Master-at-Arms force or police force during heightened states of security. ASF volunteers recieve two weeks of training provided by U.S.M.C. instructors and continually recieve refresher training to keep their skills and qualifications current.
