English: Kauai, Hawaii (Nov. 21, 2002) -- An Aries ballistic missile target is seen seconds after lift-off from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. Three and one-half minutes later, the target was intercepted by a developmental Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) launched from the Pearl Harbor-based Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70). This was the third consecutive successful intercept in the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) program, part of the multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defense System being developed by the Missile Defense Agency.
