Summary
[edit]DescriptionUS Memorial, Malta (28696182447).jpg |
The island of Malta in the Mediterranean became well known during the World War of 1939-1945 as it was relentlessly attacked by Italian and German bombers over a period of months and getting supplies to the island was extremely difficult and dangerous. The entire island was awarded the George Cross by King George VI in 1942. There are several memorials to be seen, particularly in the Capital City of Valletta which suffered extensive bomb damage. The plaque shown here is recent, and commemorates the American servicemen and merchantmen who took part in the support and defence of the island . The plaque is to be found in the Lower Barrakka Gardens, overlooking Grand Harbour. |
