Mahoney, second left, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific deputy commander and assistant exercise director for Balikatan 2015, engages with Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 during lunch at Basa Air Base, Philippines, April 22. Mahoney spoke to and ate lunch with the Marines before departing the air base. He is visiting troops in various locations throughout the Philippines to show his appreciation for their hard efforts during the exercise. Balikatan, which means “shoulder-to-shoulder” in Filipino, is an annual bilateral training exercise held since 1984, aimed at improving the ability of Philippine and U.S. military forces to work together during planning, combat and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
