Description |
English: The Army transport BURNSIDE was an iron steamer built at Newcastle in 1882 as the BRITISH YEOMAN. She was in the service of the Spanish Navy as the RITA when she was captured during the Spanish-American War. The vessel was converted to a cable-laying ship by the government and stationed in the Puget Sound. She had a capacity of 300 miles of cable. The DELLWOOD, with a capacity of 1000 miles of cable, replaced her in 1924. Junked in Oakland, California by General Metals Co. that same year. (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W.
