Sultana (American Steam Yacht, 1889) At anchor, prior to her World War I Navy service. This steam yacht was built in the 1890 for Trenor Luther Park. He sailed it with his wife Julia Catlin Park to Majorca and went to South America, the Windward Isles, the North Cape and the Suez. See The New York Times newspaper for launch details. In 1907 it was sold to Oliver Harriman and in 1917 the US Navy used it in the First World War. Photographed by Edwin Levick, New York. Note the large "YALE" flag and pennant flying from her mast peaks. Sultana was delivered to the Navy on 4 May 1917 and commissioned on 27 May 1917 as USS Sultana (SP-134). She was returned to her owner on 17 February 1919. |
