Summary

[edit]
Description As seen from the heights of Mount Suribachi, the U.S. Navy tank landing ship USS San Bernardino (LST-1189) approaches the landing beach where U.S. Marines fought a fierce battle in 1945 to gain control of this small island. This view clearly illustrates the advantage the Japanese defenders had looking down from the high ground as they fired on the troops crossing the landing beach. The San Bernardino was demonstrating an amphibious landing for attendees of the memorial service commemorating the 50th anniversary of the battle for Iwo Jima.
