English: An MV-22B Osprey with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, takes off from the flight deck of the USS Comstock, Aug. 8. The Osprey escorted six National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers from the ship to the USS Makin Island. Marines and sailors from the 11th MEU and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group team recovered a total of 11 NOAA personnel from three isolated islands more than 900 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii and directly in the path of Hurricane Iselle. MEU aircraft transported the researchers to Midway Atoll, where they could seek shelter from the storm. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Melissa Wenger/Released) |
