English: Rear Adm. Patrick J. Lorge, commandant of Naval District Washington, Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations, and Col. Robert F. Hedelund, secretary of the Navy senior military assistant, salute the American flag during the playing of the national anthem during the Chief of Naval Operations Wreath Laying Ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington June 4. The ceremony commemorated the 67th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, a four-day battle fought by the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy that began June 4, 1942. Through superior strategic planning and the overwhelming spirit of the U.S. Sailors and Marines in the fight, even when facing the greatest of odds, the battle changed the course of WWII in the Pacific and ultimately led the U.S. into victory. |
